When choosing upholstery fabric, the comparison often comes down to three of the most popular materials: velvet, chenille, and jacquard. Each has its own personality. This practical comparison helps you decide.

Look

  • Velvet: The most luxurious — sheen, color depth, and a refined soft feel.
  • Chenille: Elegant and soft but without velvet's sheen, a warm practical look.
  • Jacquard: Distinguished by its woven patterns, best for classic and lavish styles.

Durability

  • Chenille: The most durable for daily use, keeps its shape.
  • Jacquard: Very durable, patterns don't fade.
  • Velvet: Good, but its pile is affected by pressure (choose high-performance for heavy use).

Care

  • Chenille and jacquard: Relatively easier to care for.
  • Velvet: Needs more care (except the high-performance type).

Best for each use

  • Everyday sofa: Chenille.
  • Luxury/reception living room: Velvet or jacquard.
  • Classic style: Jacquard.
  • Practical luxury look: High-performance velvet.

Bottom line

There's no absolute "best" — the best is what suits your use. For practicality and durability choose chenille, for luxury choose velvet, and for classic patterns choose jacquard.
