Choosing the right upholstery fabric affects both your furniture's look and its lifespan. This guide covers the main upholstery fabric types available in Egypt, the pros and cons of each, and the factors that set the price — so you can choose with confidence.

The most common upholstery fabric types

  • Velvet: Soft, luxurious feel and an elegant look, suited to formal living rooms. Needs more care in cleaning, and dark colors can show dust.
  • Chenille: One of the most practical fabrics — soft, relatively heavy, and tightly woven; it withstands daily use and keeps its shape, an excellent choice for everyday sofas and corner units.
  • Jacquard: Distinguished by patterns woven into the fabric (not printed), durable and suited to classic, premium pieces.
  • Linen-Look Polyester: Captures the simple, natural look of linen with excellent breathability, but made from polyester so it resists creasing well and is easy to clean.
  • Leather and suede: Leather offers an elegant, easy-clean look, while suede gives a warm, velvety feel.

What determines the price per meter?

Price depends on more than fabric type: weave density and weight (heavier, denser fabric is pricier and more durable), fiber type (natural vs synthetic), dyeing method and color fastness, and extra treatments (stain or water resistance). That's why two similar-looking fabrics can differ a lot in price.

How much do you need?

As a rough reference, a living room with one large sofa, one small sofa, and two armchairs needs about 32 to 35 meters depending on the design and fabric. It's always best to take exact measurements before ordering.

How to choose

Define the use first: for heavy daily use, pick a durable, easy-clean fabric like chenille; for a luxurious look in less-used spaces, velvet or jacquard suit you. Always request a sample and check the feel and weight yourself.
