Choosing curtain fabric affects a room's light, privacy, and overall look. Each curtain fabric type has its own characteristics, and knowing them helps you choose the right one for each room.

Curtain fabric types

  • Chiffon and voile: Light, sheer fabrics that let soft light through, ideal as a first layer or for rooms where you want natural light with partial privacy.
  • Linen: An elegant natural look, lets moderate light through, and suits simple, modern styles.
  • Velvet: Heavy and luxurious, partially blocks light and provides thermal insulation, suited to bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Jacquard: With its woven patterns, adds luxury to reception rooms.
  • Blackout: A fabric treated to block light almost completely, ideal for bedrooms and children's rooms.

How to choose by room?

  • Bedroom: Needs privacy and light-blocking — blackout or velvet, often with a chiffon layer.
  • Living room: A balance of light and elegance — linen or jacquard with a sheer layer.
  • Children's rooms: Blackout to help them sleep, in cheerful colors and designs.
  • Kitchen and bathroom: Light, easy-clean fabrics.

The two-layer system

Many people prefer two layers: a sheer layer (chiffon) for daytime that lets light in with privacy, and a heavy layer (blackout or velvet) to block light at night. This system is both practical and elegant.
