Chiffon and voile are light, semi-sheer fabrics often used as a first layer with heavy curtains, but they deserve a deeper understanding of their role and features.

What's the difference between chiffon and voile?

  • Chiffon: A very light fabric with a soft, flowing feel and high sheerness.
  • Voile: Also sheer, but slightly more structured than chiffon, and sometimes comes with light patterns or embroidery.

Both serve a similar function: letting natural light through while providing partial privacy.

Why do you need a sheer layer?

  • Soft natural light: Instead of full darkness or harsh direct light.
  • Daytime privacy: Prevents direct view from outside while letting light in.
  • Elegant look: Adds a soft visual layer that complements the heavy curtain.

How is it used?

Usually hung as an inner layer closer to the window, with the heavy curtain (blackout, velvet, jacquard) as the outer layer. During the day, the sheer layer alone can be used; in the evening, the heavy layer is also closed.

Choosing the color

White and cream are the most common because they let light through naturally, but various light colors (light beige, light gray) are now available for those wanting a different touch.
